Place & people
The lower valleys belong to the Limbu (Yakthung) people, whose oral scripture, the Mundhum, guides ritual and daily life. Kanchenjunga itself is revered as Sewalungma. Village stays here are rare and unhurried—expect tongba millet beer offered in wooden vessels and curiosity rather than commerce.
The Kanchenjunga Conservation Area is managed by local councils and is one of Nepal's best-monitored snow leopard habitats. Blue sheep herds above Kambachen are their prey base. Our groups follow strict no-drone and no-playback rules in the upper valley.
Taplejung grows much of Nepal's large cardamom under alder shade. Harvest season in autumn fills the trail with porters carrying fragrant loads—an honest window into how remote hill economies connect to world markets.
