Dolpo is one of the last strongholds of Bon, a tradition older than Tibetan Buddhism. At Bon chortens and monasteries, circumambulate counter-clockwise—the reverse of Buddhist custom—and follow your guide's lead on photography.
For centuries, Dolpo-pa families traded Tibetan salt for lowland grain using yak and sheep caravans. The trade survives in reduced form; autumn still brings caravans over the high passes, a scene barely changed since the 1970s.
Peter Matthiessen and George Schaller's 1973 journey to Shey made Dolpo famous. Shey Phoksundo National Park remains one of the snow leopard's strongholds, alongside blue sheep, Himalayan wolves, and Tibetan argali.
