Mustang was an autonomous Tibetan kingdom until 2008. The Loba people speak a Tibetan dialect and follow Sakya Buddhism. The royal palace in Lo Manthang still anchors community life, and the Tiji festival each spring re-enacts the triumph of good over evil in three days of masked dance.
Thubchen and Jampa gompas hold some of the finest 15th-century Buddhist murals in the Himalaya, restored over two decades by local artisans trained alongside international conservators. Photography rules vary by chamber; your guide will advise.
Thousands of man-made caves pock Mustang's cliffs—some tombs, some meditation cells, some granaries. Archaeologists have found manuscripts and remains over 2,000 years old. Only a handful are safely accessible.
